The aftermarket for domain names is simply a secondary market for the sale of domain names. Aftermarket domain names are domain names that were previously purchased by people who have invested in the speculation that the domain name value will increase. Usually, the aftermarket domains are sold or auctioned by domain resellers.
A domainer is a person that buys and sells domain names with the purpose of making a profit, they are also referred to as publishers, domain name speculators, and domain investors. Domainers can also generate income by parking their domain or by deploying a website for the purpose of click through advertising.
Some of the benefits of investing in domains are;
- The potential for a high return.
- Passive income from parking or leasing your domain
- Small upkeep, domain names are inexpensive…parking is free, so your investment is low.
Given the high potential of return, don’t get taken away with the dream of big money. You should still do your due diligence. There have been quite a few domain investors who have made big money but those instances are not common place. This is not a get rich quick scheme.(some of my domains were purchased in the 90’s) It is important that you do your research. Research the market that your domain name is focused on, how popular is it in searches, are there prior similar sales?
I have found it difficult to sell my domains using the normal standard way of selling domains. I have tried the auctions and resellers and found limited success. Honestly, I haven’t seen any active selling and when they do approach it is very short of value and with the side information that the client has a limited budget, it’s always the same. I don’t think that the domain brokers actively approach potential buyers. I think they hope it drops in their lap. That is why I have decided to devote the time needed to actively engage in selling my domain names.
